On March 10, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges is coming to the Bing Theater in Spokane to give a presentation entitled “Wages of Rebellion: What does it take to be a rebel today?” The talk is hosted by the Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane (PJALS).

Hedges’ talk will investigate how social and psychological factors can lead to revolution, rebellion and resistance throughout the world. Recent examples include the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring, which describes a wave of revolutions throughout the Middle East over the past five years.

Much of the Arab Spring and Occupy movements, for instance, was documented on social media, which is becoming a growing factor in many rebellions. Today, as many as 73% of smartphone users access their social media accounts on their phones at least once daily, many of whom use the medium to spread information about current events.

Ultimately, Hedges argues that popular uprisings in the U.S. and around the world are inevitable as environmental destruction and wealth polarization continue.

Referred to as the “Champion of the 99%, Mortal Enemy of the 1%” by the Los Angeles Press Club, Hedges is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School and has reported as a foreign correspondent for nearly 20 years.

In addition to covering news in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, Hedges regularly speaks and writes on war, religion, American culture and conflicts like those in the Middle East.

The Bing Theater is located at 901 W. Sprague Ave. in Spokane. Tickets for the talk, which begins at 7 p.m., are $18 in advance or $20 at the door. Students can buy tickets for $10.
